Lettuce in the City

Lettuce in the City

These days nothing seems certain.  For a while there grocery store stock was incredibly low and while we were never at risk for not being able to access food, the feeling of roaming the grocery store with most of the shelves empty were disconcerting.

Here in New York we’re so lucky to have literally anything we want at our fingertips. Able to go get anything at any time of day or better yet have it delivered right to our apartments.  To feel like those options were taken away was not a comfortable thing to take in.

It got me thinking about the things that seemed to be scarce — here in NYC that’s organic greens and celery (#firstworldproblems) and while not critical to life itself, I do take my nutrition seriously.

I do admit I dream of living in a house that has a yard where I can garden and keep chickens.  Somewhere I can have a few fruit trees. Today however, I live in a high rise building with windows that only open 3 inches so my options to fill this gap myself are slim.

Luckily, the YouTube is available to show us all the options to grow veggies at home.  Did you know that you can use an empty plastic bin as a mini-greenhouse? You can and I have.

It lives on my window sill and stays warm in the afternoon sun event hough its been in the 30s at night.

It’s been a few days now and already I’m seeing some action. The “lettuce mix” I found online has sprouted and I think now have one lonely spinach sprout.

It’s not a farm upstate but it’s a start. For now I’ll be watching everyday for signs of life in my lettuce patch.
